Imam killed for speaking out against violence
A Muslim cleric who spoke out against sectarian violence has been killed in a northeastern Nigerian city beset by religious clashes.
Witnesses say Imam Ibrahim Ahmed Abdullahi was shot to death Sunday night by a group of men believed to belong to Boko Haram, a radical Muslim sect that operates in the city. Abdullahi died after the gunmen jumped out of a sport utility vehicle at his tree-shaded mosque in a quiet Maiduguri neighborhood and attacked.
Boko Haram, which means "Western education is sacrilege" in the local Hausa language, has attacked churches, killed a gubernatorial candidate and engineered a massive prison break in recent months.
